What is a responsible way to handle contested cultural heritage which has a dark history? The Aphrodite statue sparked a heated public discussion in the city of Linz over several years on how to deal with

Nazi relics in public space. During the Second World War Adolf Hitler presented a gift to “his” city Linz, a casting of Aphrodite. The statue's origin is an artwork by Wilhelm Wandschneider who was a NSDAP member. In 2008 an art student pointed to the problematic object by wrapping it up, the city reacted by removing the statue over night,

a procedure which received a lot of criticism. In 2018 the statue gets shown again in the city museum, embedded in a context of reflecting

on the problematics. At its original position a signage marks the missing statue and tells its story.
